Density Tower

Physics

Materials:
  • Water

  • Five containers

  • One tall glass

  • Vegetable oil

  • Soap

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • Honey

  • Turkey baster

  • Small objects around your house that have different sizes (volumes) and weights (masses). In the video, I used a die, screw, penny, popcorn kernel, grape, and bottle cap.

Procedure:
  1. Measure out the substances into the five containers. Measure out 3 tablespoons of each substance and put it in its own container.

  2. Clean off tablespoon after measuring out each substance.

  3. Honey goes in the glass first.  Be sure not to get any on the sides

  4. Next, use the turkey baster for the soap.

  5. Wash out the turkey baster after each time you use it.

  6. Use the turkey baster for the water.

  7. Use the turkey baster for the oil.

  8. Use the turkey baster for the rubbing alcohol.

  9. Let all the substances in the glass rest for a few minutes so that they can separate out and the layers are more visible.

  10. Now take all of your small objects and drop them into the glass. See where they land. Why did they land where they did?
